Prof. Derege Kebede

Derege Kebede is an Adjunct Professor at the School of Public Health, Addis Ababa University. He was a Visiting Professor at the Department of Epidemiology, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, USA (Jan 2017 – Dec 2019). He has worked at the World Health Organization, African Office for over 13 years, coordinating WHO’s work on health information and research. Before joining WHO, he worked at Addis Ababa University for over ten years as faculty and later as chair of the Department of Community Health. He was the first Ethiopian to be promoted to professor of epidemiology and public health by the University in 1999. He also co-founded the Butajira-Ethiopia Long-term Follow-up Study on Major Mental Disorders. He holds the M.D. Degree from AAU and the degrees of Master of Science and Doctor of Science in epidemiology from Harvard University. He has published more than 128 papers and scholarly monographs and authored seven books on physical, mental, and reproductive health and disease in Amharic.
